justjudith's top 25 Black movies

I was asked by D&N to create a list of my top 25 Black movies. Well, this is tough. What consitutes a Black movie? All Black cast? Black director?? Well, I'm not sure. So, my list will take some liberties. And it should be noted, I don't LIKE all of these movies, but I do think some of them are important to list because they made either a significant statement or they were better than I thought.

1 Boomerang
2 Jerry Maguire (simple: have you seen a better couple since Rod & Marcy Tidwell???)
3 Cooley High
4 Glory
5 Coming to America
6 Love & Basketball
7 Boyz 'n the Hood
8 The Color Purple
9 Do The Right Thing
10 House Party (just the original)
11 Let's Do It Again/Uptown Saturday Night
12 What's Love Got to Do with It
13 Sparkle (Curtis Mayfield soundtrack really fills in the thin plot!)
14 Claudine
15 Malcolm X (an epic)
16 Ray
17 Devil in a Blue Dress (Cheadle -- the best)
18 Eve's Bayou
19 Hoop Dreams
20 Def by Temptation (low budget but deep)
21 Bamboozled
22 Fresh
23 Jackie Brown (Tarantino's "Black" film)
24 Soul Food
25 Love Jones

Okay, agree that Claudine and Coming to America need to be on the list but surely School Daze and Malcolm X have to make the cut, too.

Not a bad list but a couple of questions: 1)How can you have three Spike Lee movies make the list and none of them is Malcolm X? 2) Can we get some love for New Jack City? 3) If you are going to take liberties and you want to recognize Tarantino for providing good role's for Black actors, why not Pulp Fiction (Jackson and Rhimes were on point)?

school daze won't make my list but ur right about malcolm x. that i'll fix. no new jack city love from me. and i picked jackie brown over pulp fiction because he said it was a black film bc of pam grier.

No love for Juice or Friday. What about Pimps Up, Hoes Down? "If that ain't green for the money and gold for the honey".

are they really the best of the films or just favorites? my favorite Black films would probably look slightly different.

okay, this list has taken up a lot of my energy. but added hoop dreams -- crucial in the documentary category.
