Sling Blade

I am watching Sling Blade on cable and I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie. John Ritter -- the late, great John Ritter -- was incredible in this. And I forgot how incredible Billy Bob Thornton can be. Great cast, great script, great movie.

Jason Motte Is Trying To Kill Me

I've only seen him pitch twice because I live outside of St. Louis now. But he is the new Isringhausen. Yes, Tony LaRussa hates criticism of Izzy because he was hurt but why they kept sending him out there...I digress.

Jason Motte just gave up the lead with a grand slam and another homerun. He blew a game the last time I saw him pitch and I remain unimpressed. And for some reason, he's staying in. I guess four runs isn't enough...

YUCK!

justjudith's Questions for the Universe

Upon special request for Todd.

1) Why isn't ALL of our food organic? I mean, really?

2) What's the debate about? If we don't fix health care now, when?

3) Hasn't summer been delightful? Not too hot!

4) Why does Terrell Owens have a show on VH1? It's like the BET executives decided to program VH1. Flavor Flav, Ray J and Luke Campbell, really?

5) What's playing on your iPod? For me -- Maxwell, Thievery Corporation and Radiohead.

6) What's your favorite food? Mine might be pizza. Which isn't good for me but I love it!

7) Who is the coolest person you know? Me. Vain? Probably but that doesn't make it untrue.

8) Why can't I stand that Black lady on the Popeye's commercial? Wow. That whole campaign ticks me off. No, I don't want your chicken, lady. I want you to get your dignity back.

9) While we are on it, what's with those moving people commercials? I think it's for a car or something but those people that are supposed to be the sun or the earth or grass -- they creep me out real bad. I turn the channel immediately when those come on.

10) Did you watch CNN's Black in America 2? I watched Malaak (H-U!) and the part about Steve Perry in Hartford. Really riveting stuff.

11) Are you into slow food? I am. Right now I'm reading The Omnivore's Dilemma. If we are what we eat, then we are some bad stuff waiting to happen. Yes, I have a pizza in my freezer but it's an organic one from Trader Joe's :p

12) Are the Cardinals better because of the Matt Holliday trade? Yes. Would I still like Roy Halladay? HELL YEAH!

13) Who is playing for the Rams? I look at that roster and I'm lost. After Bulger it's like crickets chirping for me. I hope they're good though.

14) What was the last movie you saw? In the theater -- The Hangover. It was funny but not as funny as the hype led me to believe. I have watched Revolutionary Road, The Wrestler, Two Lovers and He's Just Not That Into You on dvd. Two Lovers was my fave of that lot.

15) Are you watching Burn Notice on USA? It's good!

16) Why isn't it more convenient to recycle?

17) Did you know that today is my Uncle's birthday? I miss you, Uncle B.

18) Who do you love?? ME!

be safe!

Entourage - Second Ep of New Season

Is it just me or is Entourage this season pretty much like season three or four? I wish Eric had married Sloane, then their thing might be more interesting. Vince is still vapid and the constant old dude peer pressure is kinda played. If this is life in Hollywood, well...maybe it should get a little un-Hollywood.

True Blood

Even though last night's ep wasn't as good as last week's, this show is a whole lotta fun. This season is so much better than last season and I look forward to it every week.

How Hot Is It In Phoenix?

A quote from a high school pal on Facebook. Dude, I could never live there.

Julie S.
How hot is Phoenix in mid-July? Just heard from Shannon H. that she had a stainless steel bowl full of chips out by the pool... and THE CHIPS CAUGHT ON FIRE!

Thievery Corporation Cont'd

I just wanted to post the full cover. I love their music -- it's ambient, haunting with lots of global influences. Quietly, I've been collaborating with my nephew on some music and much of what I lean towards sounds like a distant, premature relative of Thievery Corporation. They're my new obsession alongside Maxwell and Radiohead. Yay for my ears!

Thievery Corporation -- Radio Retaliation

Okay, so while re-watching True Blood yesterday I decided to see if they list the music they use anywhere. And I found a fan site that does! And that's where I found the hot song from Tara and Eggs' sex scene -- Thievery Corporation's The Forgotten People. I looked them up on Rhapsody and their "Radio Retaliation" is the hotness. I love this group. They are fast becoming my new favorite. Thanks, True Blood!

Maxwell's Black Summer's Night - justjudith's Review

I dig it. It's not groundbreaking but it's standard Maxwell. For me, Pretty Wings is the stand out track but this is good old fashioned soul music and if that's your bag, you'll dig the tunes. Now, I'm kinda antsy to hear the other two discs...

What I'm Watching

This summer is great for tv. I have more shows on now than I do when the networks have their schedules up.

TNT:

Hawthorne
Dark Blue (like Leverage with cops but good)
Raising The Bar
Leverage* (just can't get into it -- kinda corny and too easily wrapped up and I can't stand the Parker character)

USA:

Burn Notice (another caper show but with CIA covert ops tactics. Fun!)
In Plain Sight
Royal Pains

HBO:

True Blood (way better this season and supremely entertaining. Great music, too!)
Entourage (it's a one trick pony, but it's a cool-for-now pony. I can't commit to another season of the same but for now...)
Hung

Bravo:

Top Chef Masters (even the master chefs have issues with the challenges)
Real Housewives of New Jersey (oy!)

Showtime:

Nurse Jackie
Weeds (the show is so far from its suburban origins that you just roll with it -- the writers kitchen sink it and I bet they have a blast)

25 Things I Know To Be True

In honor of Jeremy's 25th (and since the 21 Things post was so popular) -- here are the 25 things I know to be true.

1) Honesty is the best policy. Sure, there are times when you'll need to spare someone's feelings or keep something to yourself, but when it's time, you will know what the situation warrants, just be honest. It will save you many headaches.

2) Gravity sucks. Most women over 35 will agree with you.

3) Your metabolism slows waaaaaaaaaaay down after 25. That sucks too.

4) The best movies came out consistently in the 80's and early 90's. My favorite period for directors is the 70's. However, almost all of my favorite movies are from the mid 80's through the mid 90's. What's up with that?

5) Now that we have a Black president, it's really time for a great Black filmmaker to get a Best Director Oscar. Really.

6) And while we're at it, a Black screenwriter (ahem) needs a call to the podium as well. And not just because of being Black, but because the work is undeniably good.

7) Chris Rock's "Bring the Pain" is still the funniest stand up I've ever seen.

8) Broken hearts heal stronger than before.

9) Youth really is wasted on the young.

10) The St. Louis Cardinals are the best baseball franchise in existence.

11) HBO rules my entertainment universe...even when I had no $, I had HBO. Hell, it's not just tv!

12) Old friends are the best friends.

13) Howard University.

14) Prayer changes things.

15) You reap what you sow. If you sow some shit, you will grow some shit.

16) Personal property taxes are lame.

17) All heat is hot -- save the dry heat is better nonsense.

18) Everybody needs a vacation sometimes.

19) There will never be another Michael Jordan on the basketball court. The "new" Jordan talk is worthless.

20) Albert Pujols is the greatest baseball player playing today. Debate. Over.

21) Beer is awesome.

22) A Tribe Called Quest is worth listening to again. Go ahead find your vinyl, cd's and cassettes. It still sounds good!

23) Sometimes dreams are deferred, but they never truly die. Follow your bliss.

24) Speaking of...ignorance is NOT bliss. It's just ignorance and that is not a good look. Read, learn -- EXPAND your consciousness!

25) I love my nephew.

peace.

Happy Birthday, Jeremy!!

Today is my nephew's 25th birthday. I remember turning 25...

It's weird how the years all meld together after about that age. But, I'm happy where I am and I hope he is, too. After all, there's not much we can do about it anyway.

STL and the All-Star Game

I was mostly proud of St. Louis for putting on a great All-Star Game. I could've done without them booing President Obama. Tacky.

However, his interactions with the players before the game was awesome. He was talking trash and he had on jeans. Yes, the president can be an everyman and still be bright.

The NL lost but what else is new. It was a pretty great show for St. Louis, though.

TV: Entourage

Will these characters ever evolve? Turtle with a relationship is a start but Drama needs some growth as does Vince. I still don't get how this character is a "star" -- he's so dull. And true to form, women just drop their underwear for him because he's in the room. This show is good but I'd love to see some character arc. Ari and Lloyd made last night's show for me!

Legalize Marijuana, Regulate Prescription Meds!

It appears that Michael Jackson had a serious prescription medicine problem. Marijuana is illegal -- can send you to jail for some harsh time but these scrips are cool? Seriously, how many people have to die from abusing prescription drugs before the feds get this thing right? Let's see, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger and Gerald Levert are three people I can think of off of the top of my head. How many non-famous people are keeling over from these toxic stews?

Wow -- I haven't been posting much because I've been on vacay. I didn't travel anywhere but sometimes it's nice just not to have to go to work. And I'm not a girl who dreams of not working, I just get run down. Especially since I am trying to relaunch a film career. That takes some serious thought, friends.
